It starts with 4 Irish brothers that immigrated to America. Don't most stories start with 3 or more Irish brothers? This is more than a story, it is a legacy. Joshua Murphy (O'Morchoe) and his wife Suzanna Porterfield came to the land of promise with their sons, Francis, John, and James from Skibbereen of County Cork, Ireland. Little Zacarhi passed away during the journey, with Susanna painfully giving her son to the foaming ocean grave. This is a story of courage, ingenuity and good ole' Irish grit.

Nellie Blanch Murphy and Walter Roberts Wedding

Nellie married her sweetheart Walter Roberts on 26 Jul 1908 in Rexford, Thomas, Kansas. This union was the beginning of a very large family. Walter was born 29 Dec 1876 in Muscatine, Muscatine, Iowa. He was born to William Henry Roberts and Martha Elbern. His parents died when he was young and he was sent to live with Giles and Jennie (Sarah Jane) Humes.

Nellie graduated from school so she could do her dream to teach school. She loved music.

Wilfred Oliver Murphy

Wilfred Oliver Murphy was born on 15 Mar 1884 in Numa, Appanoose, Iowa. He passed away on 6 Apr 1903 in Colby, Thomas, Kansas.

These are the children of John Hayes Murphy and Ellen Minerva Elizabeth Norris.

Missing from this photo is: Charles Hays Murphy (8 Feb 1880-27 Apr 1888), Etta Belle Murphy (16 Aug 1889-2 Oct 1889) and Winfred Oliver Murphy (15 Mar 1884-6 Apr 1903).

Miss Nellie Blanch was about 13 years old in this 1900 photo. According to her daughter Bernice Roberts, Nellie's hair was a beautiful strawberry blond. There were 10 children born to her parents and Nellie was number 7 in line.

The rents and taxes were to pay and I could not them redeem

And that's the cruel reason why I left old Skibbereen

'Tis well I do remember that bleak November (/December) day

When the bailiff and the landlord came to drive us all away

They set the roof on fire with their cursed English spleen

And that's another reason why I left old Skibbereen

Your mother, too, God rest her soul, lay on the snowy ground

She fainted in her anguishing seeing the desolation round

She never rose, but passed away from life to immortal dreams

And that's another reason why I left old Skibbereen

Then sadly I recall the days of gloomy forty-eight.

I rose in vengeance with the boys to battle again' fate.

We were hunted through the mountains as traitors to the queen,

And that, my boy, is the reason why I left old Skibbereen.

Oh you were only two years old and feeble was your frame

I could not leave you with my friends for you bore your father's name

So I wrapped you in my cóta mór at the dead of night unseen

And I heaved a sigh and I said goodbye to dear old Skibereen

well father dear, the day will come when on vengeance we will call

And Irishmen both stout and tall will rally unto the call

I'll be the man to lead the van beneath the flag of green

And loud and high we'll raise the cry, "Revenge for Skibbereen!"
